NOAA GOES-18: First Imagery Taken by New Geostationary Satellite Showing the Earth From Orbit

On 1 March 2022 the newest geostationary satellite (GOES-18) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched. Equipped with the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI, 16 channels), it measures energy at different wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum to obtain information about Earth’s atmosphere, land, and ocean.

On 11 May 2022 NOAA shared the first images of the Western Hemisphere, taken by the GOES-18 Satellite.

UN-SPIDER Expert Mission to Ghana

From 9 to 11 May 2022, UN-SPIDER carried out an Expert Mission to Ghana to meet with staff of the National Disaster Management Organization of Ghana (NADMO). The mission allowed UN-SPIDER to gain more insights into the efforts that NADMO and other government agencies are carrying out to prepare a simulation in case of earthquakes, to be carried out in June. The simulation exercise is organized by the Government of Ghana and benefits from the technical assistance of the North Dakota National Guard.

EnMAP Hyperspectral Environmental Satellite Delivers First Images

On 1 April EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program) satellite, managed by the German Space Agency at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) launched into space. About one month later now, the first high-resolution satellite images have been received successfully.

UNOOSA, GHANA and PSIPW inaugurate international conference in Accra, Ghana

On 10 May 2022, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the University of Energy and Natural Resources of Ghana, and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) inaugurated the 5th International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Resources Management. The conference, held in Accra from 10 to 13 May 2022, aims to promote the use of space technology in water management in developing countries.

UNDRR publishes the Global Assessment Report (GAR 2022)

The UN Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR) is the flagship report of the United Nations on worldwide efforts to reduce disaster risk. The GAR is published biennially by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and is the product of the contributions of nations, public and private disaster risk-related science and research, amongst others.

Today, on 26 April 2022, UNDRR launched the 2022 GAR entitled "Our World at Risk: Transforming Governance for a Resilient Future".
