At the invitation of the Government of Kenya, the UN-SPIDER Programme will conduct a Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) to Kenya from 3 to 7 March 2014. UN-SPIDER is currently seeking international experts from the space, disaster management and disaster risk management communities who would like to volunteer for participating in this TAM. If required, UN-SPIDER will sponsor the travel and the stay of the expert to Kenya. The host institutions are the Kenya National Space Secretariat and the National Disaster Operations Centre.

TAMs are part of UN-SPIDER’s Technical Advisory Support, one of the core activities of the programme. During the mission, TAM experts will meet with key institutions involved in disaster management and authorities using space-based information for disaster-risk management and emergency response complementing national disaster management efforts. The meetings are organized with representatives from the Government, UN agencies, regional and international organizations, academia, NGOs and private entrepreneurs in Kenya. On the base of the TAM, recommendations are made and guidelines are developed for making improvements at all stages of the disaster management cycle.

UN-SPIDER is looking for four to six experts from outside of Kenya in various areas of disaster-preparedness as well as the use of space-technology, such as disaster response experts, spatial data infrastructure experts, policy analysts with experience in the use of space-based information. Preference will be given to experts who are either already collaborating or who are willing to collaborate with the authorities or relevant institutions in Kenya. Further selection criteria include experience in the country and affiliation with a regional or international entity working in the country or region. UNOOSA particularly encourages qualified women to apply.

If you are interested in joining the TAM please provide us with:

  • a short background, résumé or CV
  • an indication of your current, planned or possible type of collaboration with Kenya
  • possible sponsoring of the travel to Kenya (ticket/daily expenses).

Please send your application to Mr. Coen BUSSINK (coen.bussink@unoosa.org). Deadline for application is 12 January 2014.

Your application will be acknowledged on receipt, however, only selected candidates will be contacted.
