India: Creating a digital map of Kerala's coast

Kerala Port Department, India, announced that a digital map of its entire coastline will be created before 2015. This map would be a consistent tool for many government agencies, including Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.

The project aims to create maps with multiple layers, including terrain features, depth of coastal waters and photos of landmarks in the area. The accessibility of complete measurements of the 580 kilometers long coastline would also represent a considerable gain in managing land disputes and protecting natural resources, besides improving navigation and security.
