The CSIR is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organizations in Africa, and was established in a science council Act of Parliament in South Africa, in 1945. Initially, the CSIR focused its efforts in direct and multidisciplinary research, technological innovation as well as industrial and scientific development; in order to improve the country's competitiveness.

The CSIR focuses mainly on the generation and application of knowledge; their concentrated areas of expertise on domains therefore include; biosciences, the built environment, defence, peace, safety and security, materials science and manufacturing; and natural resources and the environment. New research areas are also being explored by the CSIR, like: nanotechnology, synthetic biology and mobile autonomous intelligent systems.
