This edition of ALNAP’s Urban Webinar series focuses on the use of mapping in urban humanitarian response. It will address broader questions of how humanitarians can harness technology to help them understand complex urban systems, what different types of mapping are available to humanitarians and what needs to change in order to better integrate mapping efforts into humanitarian response. It will then highlight the Rapid City Profiles created by UN Habitat and how these are contributing to the Syria Response.

UN launches new initiative for urban risk management

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) launched a new initiative to support cities around the world to manage risk following the worst year on record for economic losses from disasters. It also announced today that over 1,000 cities have now joined its "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign.

UN report: 60% of urban areas exposed to natural disasters

A study released by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs on 7 April 2012 states that almost 60% of the 450 urban areas worldwide with a population of at least one million people are exposed to the risk of a natural disaster. The report 2011 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects stresses that about 890 million people live in these high risk areas or cities that lie in at least one major natural disaster zone exposing the population to the risk of floods, droughts, cyclones or earthquakes.
