176 forecasting stations for monitoring floods in India

The Government of India has established 176 flood forecasting stations across the country which would help to monitor river flooding during monsoons. The stations use information captured by Indian satellites, including near-real time flood inundation maps provided by the National Remote Sensing Centre.

Deimos-2 satellite´s first anniversary

Deimos-2, Spain’s first Very High Resolution Earth Observation satellite launched on the 24th of June 2014, celebrates its first successful year in orbit. It has travelled more than 230 million km and recorded 18,000 images, covering an area of 3.2 million square km.

Its imagery can be applied to several activities, mainly to agricultural and environmental monitoring, water administration and disaster risk reduction and emergency response.

New remote sensing satellite to be developed by Russia and Belarus

Russia and Belarus announced that they are aiming to develop a new remote sensing satellite in two or three years. This Earth Observation satellite will replace a currently operating satellite whose service life will shortly come to an end.

Roscosmos to expand its satellite fleet

Roscosmos, the Russian Federal Space Agency, is about to launch more satellites in order to create a new centre for global imaging that could enhance Earth remote sensing activities. The project includes setting in orbit various satellites between 2016 and 2025, so that the total fleet would increase to 20. The project will also count on the cooperation of the Research Centre for Earth Operative Monitoring, an entity within the Russian Space Systems.

Airbus to build the world’s largest satellite network

At the ongoing Paris Airshow European spacecraft company Airbus Defence and Space announced that they will produce a fleet of 900 satellites for OneWeb, a project carried out by British Channel Islands in order to enable internet access in remote areas. It will be made up of 900 small, low orbit satellites which are cheaper and faster to mass produce and have shorten latency periods than those circling further away from Earth.
