UN-SPIDER’s Regional Support Office in Romania, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), announced the prizes of the European Satellite Navigation Competition - ESNC 2015 – Romania Challenge. The competition will award the best ideas for innovative applications in satellite navigation, offering winners the necessary support and advice to open or develop a business based on their competition ideas. ROSA became the regional partner with Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) for the ESNC 2015. It will be the first national edition in Romania.

Romania plans to launch its own communications satellite, as the website telecompaper reported.

The satellite is to be developed in the coming years and will ensure services for both the state as well as private companies, the minister for Communication and Informational Society Ministry Razvan Cotovelea said according to a local paper.

The Ministry will elaborate a development plan until the end of 2014 or in the first part of 2015 which will establish what sort of satellite it is needed as well as the satellite's capacity and costs, Cotovelea said.

Romania joined nine other countries in the Network of European Space Education Resource Offices (ESERO), the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) announced. The official launch event took place during the ‘Romanian Space Week,’ an annual scientific conference organised by ROSA between 12 and 16 May 2014.

ESERO is a project established by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with national space agencies to promote space technology to younger generations. ESERO, ROSA and ESA will support primary and secondary schools in teaching/learning STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to motivate younger generations to pursue STEM-related careers.

A two day conference held in Bucharest, Romania last week showed the immense benefits and economic potential of Europe's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme (GMES) for the region. The conference "GMES: News Opportunities for Eastern Europe" showcased how the GMES emergency response service (SAFER) had supported Romania in responding to the 2010 floods providing flood extent maps in near-real time.

The aim of the conference was to increase awareness in Eastern Europe about GMES and its potential for the environment, civil security and commerce. When GMES enters its operational phase in 2014, decision-makers will have access to reliable, timely and accurate information services to manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security. The economic benefits of GMES are estimated to €4–12 for every €1 invested.

During the 52nd Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs signed cooperation agreements to establish UN-SPIDER Regional Support Offices with the I.R. As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM)programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) organises each year an advanced Land Training Course devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and operational EO Missions (e.g. Sentinels) for science and applications development.

Post graduate, PhD students, post doctoral research scientists and users from European countries and Canada interested in Land Remote Sensing and its applications are invited to apply to the 5 day course on the subject, which will be held at the University of Agronomic Science and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania on 14-18 September 2015.

FOSS4G stands for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial. It is the flagship event of OSGeo and takes places on an annual basis.

In 2019, geo-spatial.org, the OSGeo Local Chapter of Romania, is organizing the FOSS4G conference. 

FOSS4G 2019 is dedicated to enable an asymptotic connection between software and data.

The UN-SPIDER Regional Support Office (RSO) in Romania is hosted by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).  The cooperation agreement between ROSA and UNOOSA was signed on occasion of the 52nd COPUOS, 4 June 2009.

Established in 1991, by the Government Decision no. 923/ 20 Nov 1995, ROSA is an independent public institution.

The mission of the Agency:

  • to coordinate the national space research and applications programs
  • to promote space development
  • to be the Government representative in the international space cooperation
  • to develop specific project oriented research

ROSA is authorized to establish research and development centres oriented on specific objectives of the Romanian Space Programme.
