First Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas

The Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is expected to become the region’s main mechanism for guiding the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action in the Americas, promoting coordination among the subregions and strengthening cooperation on issues and priorities for disaster risk reduction throughout the hemisphere. The Regional Platform will also serve as a forum for presenting and validating the Americas’ HFA progress report and consolidating the message to be brought from the Americas to the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction through its second session that will take place on June 15-19, 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland. The objectives of this first regional session are: to increase understanding of disaster risk reduction as an integral part of sustainable development, to share information surrounding the advances being made throughout the region towards the implementation of the HFA, to identify the main priorities and challenges for reducing disaster risk, to promote concerted actions, the exchange of information and cooperation among countries and subregions, to offer practical tools and guidelines to nations and communities for reducing disaster risk, to consolidate existing thematic platforms in the region, and to strengthen new and existing alliances, networks and associations for promoting specific aspects of the Hyogo Framework for Action’s implementation. Target audience Participation in this first session of the Regional Platform is open to national HFA focal points, inter-governmental organizations from throughout the region, international agencies, civil society organizations and other members of the ISDR system.
