Caribbean Flood Pilot Initial Review Meeting

Immediately before the UN-SPIDER Conference, on October 20th, participants in the Caribbean Flood Pilot will be holding a day-long working meeting to review the status of the five National Partner mitigation projects and to take stock of SensorWeb activitations during the 2009 Hurricane Season. The five Phase 1 National Partners are Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Jamaica and Saint-Lucia. Anyone interested in issues dealing with satellite-based disaster management of floods or with the Caribbean in general is welcome to attend, but participants must reserve their spot by sending an e-mail to Joerg.Szarzynski (at) unoosa.org.
The Caribbean Flood Pilot is a regional disaster management activity under GEO Task DI-09-02B Regional End-to-end Demonstrations. It is a best efforts demonstration project that leverages millions of dollars in satellite investment and in-kind contributions from national partners and contributing space agencies to develop a showcase for enhanced regional disaster management. The main objectives of the Caribbean Flood Pilot are:

• To demonstrate the effectiveness of satellite imagery to strengthen regional, national and community level capacity for mitigation, management and coordinated response to natural hazards
• To identify specific satellite-based products that can be used for disaster mitigation and response on a regional level
• To identify capacity building activities that will increase the ability of the region to integrate satellite-based information into disaster management initiatives
