5th GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium

GEO Secretariat and GEO Japan

Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)

Wed, 16 Mar - Fri, 18 Mar 2011

The theme is “Towards the Establishment of Data Sharing and Data Integration in the Asia-Pacific Region”, and its objective is to promote the exchange of data and information through the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and to find solutions for achieving societal benefits through GEOSS in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Symposium will further strengthen international networking amongst the region's countries and share the Asia-Pacific's experiences with the world. Each country will report on its progress in GEOSS Implementation since last year's Symposium. To focus the discussions, we are organizing technical sessions on the following topics:

  • Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI);
  • Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (AP-BON);
  • Forest Carbon Tracking (FCT); and
  • Ocean Observation and Climate.

The Symposium will demonstrate the benefits of Earth observation applications to end users in developing countries, particularly in the fields of forests and agriculture, energy, human health, and water in the Asia-Pacific region. It will also contribute to the advancement of GEO's critical new effort to gather support for regional activities through the "Call for Proposals: Earth Observations in Decision Support Projects".
