The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated twice in the context of Hurricane Sandy - the largest Atlantic tropical storm system on record.
On 31 August 2012, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) activated the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
