USGS: New GLS Visualization Interface

USGS released a new EROS Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) GLS Visualization Interface. The new interface allows users to immediately download Global Land Survey (GLS) 2010 and GLS 2005 Surface Reflectance Products. GLS 2000 surface reflectance products will be available soon as well.

Cameroon: Satellite imagery for floods in Logone et Chari

UN-SPIDER, upon the request of its National Focal Point in Cameroon, requested support through its network to acquire satellite imagery of the Kousseri area, Logone et Chari district, in the far North of Cameroon. The region is experiencing serious floods leaving tens of thousands of people homeless and causing heavy damages.

NASA Satellites observe Monsoon Season Floods in Pakistan

The summer of 2012 marked the third consecutive monsoon season in Pakistan that caused widespread flood damage. These images show part of the irrigation infrastructure. Both images show flood conditions, but flood waters shifted between the date of the earlier image, acquired September 19, 2012, and the later image, acquired October 5, 2012.

NASA satellites capture effects of US drought

A deep and persistent drought struck vast portions of the continental United States in 2012. Though there has been some relief in the late summer, a pair of satellites operated by NASA shows that the drought lingers in the underground water supplies that are often tapped for drinking water and farming.

Flood map of Pakistan via Charter released

On 18 September 2012, the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated for floods in Pakistan. Torrential rain, which began on 5 September, had caused flash floods in Pakistan leaving an estimated one million people homeless.

GeoEye partners up with Fugro

The satellite imagery provider GeoEye announced an agreement with Fugro for online imagery dissemination through Fugro World, Fugro's global portal for delivery of data and solutions. GeoEye’s EyeQ platform will be integrated with Fugro World to support online access to satellite imagery.

GIO EMS: New European GMES mapping service publishes user guide

GMES, the European Earth Monitoring programme, has published a user guide to its new, free of charge emergency mapping service, the GMES Initial Operations Emergency Management Service (GIO EMS-Mapping). The guide will be made available on the GIO Portal.

UNOOSA activates International Charter for Earthquake in Iran

UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER has activated the International Charter: Space and Major Disaster to provide satellite imagery for the two strong earthquakes that occurred in Iran on 11 August 2012. This international mechanism was activated on behalf of the Iranian Space Agency, host of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Office in Iran.

Geoscience Australia makes Landsat imagery freely available

Geoscience Australia (GA) will soon publish free satellite images in near real time. The images will be captured by the satellite Landsat 8, expected to launch in early 2013 and to be fully operational by May or June of that year. They will be published online under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia licence.

DigitalGlobe buys GeoEye

DigitalGlobe Inc has struck a deal to buy GeoEye Inc for $453 million, creating the world's largest provider of commercial satellite imagery. These two companies are the only suppliers of commercial satellite imagery to U.S. spy and military agencies. They are joining forces ahead of drastic cuts expected in the U.S. defense budget. Moreover, the combined company aims to prompt its commercial and international trade in an attempt to reduce dependence on the U.S. government.
