Germany to launch microsatellite to detect forest fires

Microsatellites TET-1 and BIROS

In October 2015, Germany will launch the Berlin Infrared Optical System (BIROS), a microsatellite capable of monitoring forest fires from Space. The microsatellite was partly developed by the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin of the German Aerospace Agency (DLR). BIROS will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in India.

After the calibration and validation of ALOS-2/CIRC, the Japanese Space Agency JAXA confirmed that the data quality of ALOS-2/CIRC is adequate. All ALOS-2/CIRC data is therefore now available to the public.

Earth observation cubesats to be developed by Planet Labs

Dove cubesats of Planet Lab's "Flock 1" constellation.

The American private company Planet Labs announced that it will invest USD 95 million into the development of Earth-observation satellites of reduced dimensions and high-resolution imagery potential. The cubesats will be just 20 centimeters long, 10 centimeters wide and 10 centimeters tall.

Ghana: First Earth observation satellite to be developed and launched

The satellite will work around the West-african region.

Ghana has announced its intention to launch its first Earth observation satellite, the Ghana Satellite One (GHANASAT 1).

The project will be led by the Ghana Space Science and Technology (GSSTI), under the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), and with technical support from MENASAT Gulf Group PLC.
