Leaders of the global science community have issued joint statements to the world leaders meeting at the 38th G-8 Summit that started today. The national science academies from 15 countries including China, India, the US and the UK have called on the leading industrialised economies to pay greater heed to science and technology to tackle Earth's three greatest challenges.

The Public Library on Science (PLoS), a non-profit US-publisher, announced the launch of a new flexible publishing channel. "PLoS Currents: Disasters" makes available research results and operational analyses derived from the study or management of all types of disasters in a timely and flexible manner. PLoS thus supports one of the core goals of the UNIDSR Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 by strengthening “the sharing of research findings, lessons learned and best practices”.
