New NASA sensor to support drought and wildfire prediction

Major disasters such as droughts and wildfires are driven by the dryness of vegetation. To enhance the monitoring of plant water stress, NASA launched and installed a new sensor on the International Space Station. ECOSTRESS (ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station) allows identifying loss of water in leaves- even before they show visible signs of trouble.

Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI)

The Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI) provides information about the relative vegetation condition compared to the years being analyzed. As the state of vegetation is influenced by weather conditions the SVI can also be utilized as a drought-index and for regular drought monitoring to facilitate the early identification of the slow-onset natural hazard. The SVI is based on satellite Vegetation Indices (VI) such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) indicating the estimated vegetation condition.

NASA: Advanced Webinar: Techniques for Wildfire Detection and Monitoring

This is event is available for participation on an ongoing basis
Undefined

NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training Department is offering a new webinar on wildfire detection on July 19th, 2018 from 18:00-20:00 EDT (UTC-4). Following the event the webinar will be available as a recording.

In light of increasing drought and wild fire frequencies, the first session describes key aspects of satellite based wildfire monitoring and introduces a new QGIS plugin: "QGIS Fire Mapping Tool (FMT)". The second session gives an overview of the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) and demonstrates how to use the GWIS viewer.

Prolonged drought can result in economic, environmental, and health-related impacts. In this webinar, participants will learn how to monitor drought conditions and assess impacts on the ecosystem using precipitation, soil moisture, and vegetation data. The training will provide an overview of drought classification, as well as an introduction to web-based tools for drought monitoring and visualization. Lectures will be followed by hands-on demonstrations of data access and visualization.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
