The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) and France’s Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) have signed a space cooperation agreement. The agreement provides a framework for both countries to collaborate on different topics, including satellite developments, exploration of outer space, space applications, R&T, nanosatellites development and training, and the Space Climate Observatory (SCO) initiative, whose mission is to analyze and monitor global climate change and its impacts from Earth observation data. The cooperation will further strengthen the relations between the two countries in the field of space science and technology.

From 14 to 16 September 2014, 19 Arab States met in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, for the 2nd Arab Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. They discussed the way forward for disaster risk reduction in the region and their recommendations for the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction which will be adopted next March in Sendai, Japan, at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The declaration emerging from the conference calls for a "strong focus on water and food security, the effects of climate change and extreme weather events, including drought, on dry lands and arid zones which are home to two billion people around the world," as UNISDR reports.

The Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Margareta Wahlström, said: “The Arab States are giving strong support to ensuring that reducing disaster risk is seen as a cross-cutting issue for the post-2015 development agenda including new agreements on climate change and...

Bidding for the construction of two ground receiver stations will be opened soon by Kamal Ewida Earth Observatory, quoted Mail & Guardian.

Kamal Ewida Earth Observatory, currently seeking a site in Egypt, is a joint project by South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Egypt's National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences.

The project will enable the rapid processing of information received from satellites monitoring Africa, in order to improve disaster relief response times to areas affected by floods, drought, and global warming.

The bulk of the project's funding is being provided by NATO's Science for Peace Programme, with the Egyptian government also providing contributions. (Source: GISDevelopment)

Addressing the climate crisis requires bold and rapid collective action

  • Egypt's COP27 presidency vision is to move from negotiations and planning to implementation. Now is the time for action on the ground. It is therefore incumbent upon us to move rapidly towards full, timely, inclusive, and at-scale action on the ground.
  • We need to harmonize our global efforts. If we are to meet our pledges and commitments words must be turned into action.
  • Globally, the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events is impacting the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. Rising global average temperature and rapid global warming are causing alarming consequences on human beings and all other forms of life on earth.
  • In fact, the climate crisis will aggravate social, economic and environmental threats. Thus, urgent actions...

Introduction

"The increasing success of our series of international symposiums entitled "Living with the Landscape", first initiated with Sinai Peninsula's first conference in 2008, and followed by the second in the Siwa Oasis 2009, the third in Aswan 2010 and the fourth in Dahab 2020 is genuinely our motivation to continue this year with the Fifth symposium entitled "Consequences and Adaption". Despite the great financial and administrative obstacles, in what has become our yearly environmental tradition, we as usual, continue to work in order to offer you the same quality opportunity of academic cooperation and cross-nations collaboration among academics from all corners of the globe. Our main issue this time is discovering and discussing people's ways of adaption with their natural environment.

The future of Earth is at stake as the world grapples with a climate changing at rates unprecedented in human times. Climate change is fueling a growing gulf of economic and social inequity, shrinking the scope of biodiversity, turning fallow the agricultural lands needed to feed humanity, and eating away at our common heritage through the destruction of world heritage sites. These challenges manifest as massively disruptive forces in the lives of individuals and communities which, through a multitude of mechanisms ranging from dysfunctional governance to unhealthy industrial practices, feed back into anthropogenic induced climate change and concomitant causes of disaster. Arid regions are particularly susceptible to climate change due to a natural scarcity and fragility of resources which are already combining to drive social unrest caused by hunger, forced human migration, and related economic misfortune.

Droughts are a recalcitrant problem in arid regions and are...
