USA: Satellite measurements for unusual rainfall over Midwest
Data provided by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite has helped experts to analyze the unusual flash floods that affected territories from Oklahoma to Tennessee during the first two weeks of August 2013 causing at least two deaths and damages in hundreds of homes and other structures. Moreover, during the previous month of July the affected states had already received more rain than average.
The image shows precipitations over U.S. Midwest and Plains states for early August 2013, with blue areas representing rainfall levels over the average expected. According to NASA, the rainfall measurements come from the Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis, based on data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite.
