Climate and land use change are key factors influencing the terrestial hydrological system which need to be managed by society in the coming decades. These changes act and provoke system reactions on different spatial and temporal scales, which result in immense challenges for invironmental and hydrological research. Terrestial environmental research has to tackle these challenges.
New approaches are needed to detect complex interaction and feedback mechanisms between the various compartments of the terrestial system and to identify long-term trends in observed states and fluxes. Therefore, the development and implementation of large-scale, long-term, and integrated environmental research infrastructures has become more and more important during the last years across all scientific disciplines.
