Nepal - International Training Course

From 9 to 13 June 2014, UN-SPIDER conducted an international training programme on multi-level risk profiling jointly with its Regional Support Office ICIMOD.

International Training Programme on Multi-level Risk Profiling
Trainers: 
The experts providing the training course included specialists from UN-SPIDER, from ICIMOD, from National Disaster Reduction Centre of China NDRCC (China), and from the National Remote Sensing Centre NRDC (India).
Target Group: 
20 participants from disaster management agencies and stakeholder departments of ICIMOD Member States participated in the training programme. All but one ICIMOD Member state attended the programme: Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.
Training Profile: 
<p>The training on ‘Regional Training on Multi-level Flood Risk Mapping’ was jointly organized by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and UN Platform for Space-based information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UNSPIDER) of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. Part of the support for this training course comes from “SERVIR-Himalaya”, funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).</p> <p>The purpose of the training programme is to improve disaster risk management using space based and geospatial information by imparting hands-on training to the officials of member countries supported by ICIMOD and UN-SPIDER. </p> <p>The training covered climate change, disaster risk reduction and space technology, developing hazard and vulnerability indicators at national and sub-national level, flood inundation modelling using HEC-RAS methods, flood inundation mapping and monitoring using satellite images and landslide hazard mapping using satellite remote sensing. More than 50% time was devoted to the hands-on sessions on flood inundation model (held by an expert of ICIMOD), on flood mapping and monitoring (held by an expert of NDRCC) and on landslide hazard mapping (held by an expert of the National Remote Sensing Centre of India). UN-SPIDER delivered lectures on climate change, disaster risk reduction and space technology and on the role of space technology in the Hyogo Framework of Action (HFA) and HFA2.</p> <a href="http://www.un-spider.org/sites/default/files/2014_Nepal_Training_Report_Final.pdf">Download the training course report.</a>

Space technology for drought monitoring in Africa and Asia
Target Group: 
20 officials from eight African countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Sudan) and officials from five countries from the Asia-Pacific region (Fiji, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Samoa and Viet Nam) took part in the training course.
Training Profile: 
The objective of the training course was to strengthen the capacity of national agencies in the use of space-based technologies for drought monitoring and assessment. The training included comprehensive hands-on sessions based on data sets (satellite images) prepared for Africa and Asia. The main topics were drought management and space technology; satellite data processing and spatial-temporal analysis; space technology applications for drought risk assessment; and space technology applications for drought monitoring and loss assessment.

El programa de Maestría en Geomática Aplicada a la Gestión de Riesgos Ambientales está dirigido a profesionales universitarios de la región, el país, y del exterior, con interés en adquirir y aplicar herramientas de geomática a la transferencia de tecnología, docencia, investigación y gestión de los recursos naturales. El grupo meta para la maestría corresponde con el de profesionales egresados de carreras de grado relacionadas a la geomática (ingenieros agrónomos, ambientales, geólogos, biólogos, Lic. en gestión ambiental, veterinarios, agrimensores, entre otros), profesionales que se desempeñan en organismos estatales (INTA, CONICET, Universidades, SENASA, etc) y privados (consultoras, empresas, etc.). Este perfil potencial, otorga al programa una fuerte componente profesional que complementa la formación académica ofrecida, y supone que la dedicación de los alumnos de la maestría pueda ser parcial (no menos de 20 horas de dedicación semanal). Esta característica ha sido considerada a los fines de definir la modalidad de dictado de las actividades de la maestría.

Los requisitos de admisión han sido establecidos en el Reglamento de funcionamiento de la carrera. En términos generales son:

  • Poseer Titulación de grado otorgada por una Universidad Argentina o Extranjera, oficialmente reconocida; o poseer titulación no universitaria de carrera de cuatro o más años de duración, quedando a criterio del Comité Académico de la carrera exigir otros requisitos a fin de asegurar la compatibilidad de formación del estudiante con las exigencias del programa de maestría.
  • Presentar la solicitud de admisión y documentación establecida en el Reglamento de funcionamiento de la carrera.
  • Realizar la inscripción a la carrera en los horarios, fechas y lugares dispuestos para tal fin. Aceptar los términos establecidos en el Reglamento de Funcionamiento de la Carrera.
  • Los Alumnos extranjeros podrán ser admitidos a la carrera si, además de los requisitos establecidos previamente, presentan la documentación académica legalizada en el país de origen por la autoridad educativa correspondiente (Ministerio de Educación o similar), Consulado Argentino en ese país, o Apostilla de La Haya. Las solicitudes de admisión a la carrera que no se enmarquen en las condiciones normadas, serán examinadas por el Comité Académico, quien emitirá el respectivo dictamen aceptando o no la solicitud de admisión.
