The Ministry of Science and Technology is responsible of contributing effectively to the construction of civilization by harnessing scientific research, science and technology for the development of natural resources and the achievement of economic and social development. The Ministry contributes to the achievement of excellence in the field elaboration of power, and keeping security in its comprehensive concept.
The Ministry of ICT and Telecommunication has the mission to provide information and communication services in a timely manner, through the development of telecommunication and Information Technology (IT) with the use of latest technology. It promotes wider accessibility of IT services while maintaining the integrity and excellence of service as well as the increase of IT literacy levels of the public and availability of Sri Lankan content.
The Ministry of Technology and Research (MoTR) was established with effect on 30th April, 2010 and is to formulate and implement policies pertaining to the popularization and advancement of science and technology. This includes scientific research and development and transfer of technologies, ensuring improved quality and productivity so as to upgrade economic activities, which are essential for the economic and social development of Sri Lanka.
Mandalay Institute of Technology initially pursued undergraduate courses in the fields of science and engineering. On 1st July 1998, MIT was renamed to Mandalay Technological University (MTU). Since its foundation, the university has continued to grow and develop to meet the changing requirements of Science and Technology. Later, to offer a wider variety of degrees, MTU introduced post graduate programmes for talent and highly motivated graduates.
To promote the effectiveness and success in the development of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology was established on 2 October 1996.The Ministry of Science and Technology is based on the Myanmar Science and Technology Research Department which carries out research and development work for the development of the nation’s industry since 1954.
The National Council for Science and Technology is the governing body in the field of scientific and technological progress, and it is responsible for the promotion and coordination of scientific and technological activities carried out by the National Science and Technology. It is also responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the Plan of Scientific and Technological Development.
The agreement for the establishment of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (CRECTEALC) was signed by the governments of Mexico and Brazil in 1997. The CRECTEALC impart long duration courses on space science and technology education.
