UN-SPIDER supports emergency responses for Nepal and Sierra Leone floods and landslides

Heavy rainfall has caused deadly flooding and mudslides in and around Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, while the worst monsoon rains in 15 years have triggered flooding and landslides in 27 of Nepal's 75 districts.

UNOOSA has requested the activation of the European Commission Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service for both disasters.

Nepal: International Charter activated for landslides

SERVIR capturing flooding and landslides in India and Nepal on 26 June 2013

On 5 August 2014 the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated at the request of Asia Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) on behalf of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Office, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). The reason of the activation is a landslide in the Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal which occurred on 2 August due to heavy rains.
