A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook north-central Costa Rica on 8 January and many rural towns have been under serious landslide threat. At least 220 people were injured during the earthquake and 34 people died. Electrical infrastructure and roads were also seriously damaged.

The quake "felt like a truck was passing" and authorities were making further checks on whether there had been any damage in the remote area, the official said. The quake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was 95 km (60 miles) southeast of Raba in Sumbawa and 270 km west of Ende in Flores, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an updated release on its web site. Its epicentre was at a depth of 87 km. Sumba, with a population of 611,400 in 2005, is in East Nusa Tenggara province in central Indonesia.
