On 15 May, 2013, UNITAR/UNOSAT, on behalf of UNOCHA, activated the International Charter Space and Major Disasters to obtain satellite-derived image-products for the impact of tropical cyclone Mahasen.
SPARRSO was established in 1980 as an autonomous organisation of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It keeps close collaboration with national, regional and international organizations, institutions and agencies.

The Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh established the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) as a public trust in 2002. CEGIS' mission as a scientifically independent centre of excellence is to support the management of natural resources for sustainable socio-economic development using integrated environmental analysis, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and information technology.
