Sentinel 2-B sends first images

After one week in orbit, ESA’s new Sentinel 2-B satellite delivered its first images of Earth. The first acquisition began over the Baltic sea and made a strip-like observation through eastern Europe down to northern Libya. The images were sent to the Matera ground station in Italy, where they have been processed afterwards.

Agreement between Australia and Europe on Earth Observation research

An agreement has been signed between the Australian CSIRO research institute and the European Space Agency (ESA) which will allow Australia to get access to European satellite data, while ESA would benefit from Australia’s research expertise during joint projects on space technology and applications.

The European radar satellite Sentinel-1A has captured the rupture of the recent major earthquake in Napa Valley, California, USA. The quake on 24 August 2014 was the biggest one in 25 years.

Flooding in Namibia part of the first data acquisition from Sentinel-1

Sentinel -1 first images received

The Sentinel-1 satellite of the European Space Agency delivered its first images. As UN-SPIDER reported, the satellite was launched successfully on 3 April. The mission is the first of ESA’s Copernicus environmental monitoring programme.

ESA: Successful launch of the first mission of EU Copernicus Programme

ESA has successfully launched the first satellite for the Copernicus program – Sentinel 1. The 2.3 tonne satellite lifted off on a Soyuz rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 21:02 GMT.
