Moldovan premier asks for EU's, USA's, CIS' support to overcome floods' consequences

Chisinau, 9 July /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Vlad Filat has sent a letter to his counterparts from the EU, the USA, the CIS and other countries participating in the Partnership Forum for Moldova held in Brussels on 23 March 2010, asking for their help to overcome the situation created by floods, the government's press service has said.

The letter says that Moldova has been lately hit by floods, which destroyed 500 houses and social and cultural facilities. Thousands of hectares of farmlands were affected and many roads and bridges were badly damaged. The letter also notes the death of one man and another one who has been reported missing.

Filat said in the letter that the government had taken a string of urgent measures to overcome the consequences of this natural disaster: residents of a string of high-risk populated areas were evacuated; over 4,500 families were temporarily accommodated in schools, spas and barracks. Filat specified that all the necessary forces were involved in the alleviation of consequences, but Moldova's internal resources were not enough to cope with the large-scale challenges and to urgently manage the situation.

"In these extremely difficult conditions faced by my country, I call on you to consider ways to provide humanitarian assistance and financial aid in order to overcome the situation created by the natural disaster," Filat's letter also says.
