Catastrophe prevention: Algeria, UN agree on space pictures use

Deputy Minister for Maghreb and African affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, said Thursday (January 28, 2010) in Addis Ababa that an Agreement between Algeria and the United Nations Office has been signed for the opening of a regional supporting office for North Africa and the Sahel (UN-SPIDER). The agreement, signed with the Office’s Space Affairs Bureau, will facilitate the development and rapid use of space images for the prevention and management of natural disasters, said Messahel in his speech during the review of report of the Ministerial Conference on Information and communication technology, held in November 2009 in South Africa.

The cooperation was announced by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika during the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change in December 2009.
