United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Burkina Faso

The Sahel, in Burkina Faso is facing an unprecedented crisis situation since 2005. A deficit of cereal production is exposing vulnerable people and children to acute malnutrition due to high food prices and the lack of food security. Moreover, as a result of recent instability and the conflict in northern Mali, thousands of people have fled their homes to seek refuge from ethnic tensions and violent clashes. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.
