In the last few years, in addition to continuous improvements of earth-observation and Web mapping techniques, a new source of geo-information based on social media and new mobile technologies has emerged, bringing new insights into the mechanism of rapid crisis mapping. The crowd-sourcing phenomenon has opened a new path for a variety of open-source internet based data sources that proved to be a valuable operational solution for real-world requirements in crisis management.

The following topics will be addressed in four main sessions:

Validation and quality control of new web-based source, social networking and crowd- sourcing tools for mapping of crisis information
Validation of crisis maps following the disasters of 2010
Readability of crisis information: implementation and evaluation of methods of dynamic cartographic visualizatio
Live session on “Best practices in validation and quality assessment of rapid crisis maps”.
