Mapping vulnerability in Africa to combat climate change and natural hazards

A new mapping tool that analyzes how climate change, natural hazards, conflict and aid intersect in Africa has been developed by the Climate Change and African Political Stability (CCAPS) program. The CCAPS is an initiative piloted by the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin. Since its beginning in 2009 it has developed an online mapping tool to measure information on four sources of vulnerability in the African continent: physical exposure to climate-related hazards, population density, household and community resilience, and governance and political violence. The mapping tool, using detailed regional climate models and geographic information systems, analyzes how these issues intersect to try to identify causes and levels of vulnerability in Africa.
