The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, a Regional Support Office of UN-SPIDER and American Scientists will consider cooperation in creating a system protecting people and social facilities against threats from outer space, such as Near-Earth Objects.

The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was set up by the General Assembly in 1959 ( resolution 1472 (XIV)) to review the scope of international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space, to devise programmes in this field to be undertaken under United Nations auspices, to encourage continued research and the dissemination of information on outer space matters, and to study legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space.
On 12 to 16 November 2012, UNOOSA organized the Workshop "Space Technology Applications for Socio-Economic Benefits" in Santiago de Chile, Chile. The Workshop was the third activity of the UN Progamme on Space Applications focusing exclusively on socio-economic benefits of space technology applications. In 2010 and 2011 two previous workshops were held in Turkey and Vietnam.

On 22 and 23 September 2012 the first SpaceUp "Unconference" in Europe will open its gates to participants at the Cosmodrome Planetarium in Genk, Belgium. SpaceUp is a new communication channel, rooted in the social media world. It is an unconference, meaning that the event is organized, apart from the actual program itself. The conference attendees determine the event content themselves. All people attending are expected to fill a conference slot with a space-related subject, gradually filling a blank grid of time slots.
UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER has activated the International Charter: Space and Major Disaster to provide satellite imagery for the two strong earthquakes that occurred in Iran on 11 August 2012. This international mechanism was activated on behalf of the Iranian Space Agency, host of UN-SPIDER's Regional Support Office in Iran.
